Volunteer: Staff Capacity Building in Fisheries Data Collection and Analysis
To help turn around the struggling economy of Southern Sudan, CNFA as a member of the Volunteers for Economic Growth Alliance (VEGA) is implementing the United States Agency for International Development/Sudan (USAID/Sudan)-funded Agricultural Market and Enterprise Development (AMED) project. A team of international organizations is collaborating through VEGA and AMED to accomplish two primary objectives:
1) Strengthening market and enterprise development in selected urban areas as a means of increasing private sector employment; and
2) Building the capacity of local community, country and state level government and civil society organizations to provide effective support to livelihood development and employment generation initiatives with a focus on the reintegration of internally displaced peoples.
CNFA is searching for a short term volunteer. CNFA will provide the following to facilitate the assignment: all transportation (volunteer's home <-> Nairobi, Nairobi <-> Juba, local transportation in Southern Sudan), all accomodation will be arranged in advance and paid for, an M,I&E allowance, training materials & supplies.
Specific assignment summary details:
Host: Padak Fisheries Training Center
Location: Baidid-South Bor County, Jongole State
Title: Staff Capacity Building in Fisheries Data Collection and Analysis
Duration: The duration of the assignment is for a period of four weeks including travel. The training commences on 1st November and runs through to 21st November 2007. This is the best timing for fishing. The potential is very high because of low water level. This will help the volunteer tour the markets and the landing sites.
Executive Summary:
Padak Fisheries Training Center is one of the six specialized training centers in southern Sudan and the only one working in the field of fishery. Since inception, the center has embarked mainly in basic skills training to government employee, NGOs and communities. This strategy is aimed at boosting the fish production and marketing, creating jobs and increasing household income in the long term. In the meantime, the development of the fish industry is moving slowly. The center lacks skills in data collection and analysis, which are a key element in supporting the revitalization of fish Production and Trade in Southern Sudan. However, for the Center to plan adequately for the future it needs the data on what the past was and what the present is like. As such, the Center is exploring the VEGA/AMED program to seek a highly qualified volunteer to provide training to staff of the Center on appropriate methods and tools of fisheries data collection and analysis.
Expertise Required:
A regional volunteer is needed for a three-week-training assignment on Fisheries Data Collection, Analysis and reporting. The volunteer should be well-qualified and vast in methods, tools and techniques of data collection from stakeholders and should have wide knowledge of working with entrepreneurs and the business communities. He/she should be holder of at least a degree in fisheries, agriculture or related area with minimum of 5 years experience.
